Play tiles that match either open end of the line. Empty your hand first to win. If you cannot play, you pass. When neither side can move, the lower pip total wins.
The roots lie in Chinese gupai; the modern form took shape in 18th-century Italy. In the Caribbean it is a national pastime — tables fill the streets of Cuba and the Dominican Republic every day. Toppling them is a later spin-off.
Count the tiles. There are only seven of each number. Watch the table and your hand and you can work out what your opponent lacks — close both ends with that number and they can only pass. Play your doubles early.
