Make them draw the joker. A poker face helps.
Add one joker to the 52 and deal the lot between two players. Discard any pair you hold. Then take turns drawing a card from the other player's hand — if the card you draw makes a pair, that goes too. Empty your hand first to win. Whoever is left holding the joker loses.
It began as Old Maid in England, where one face card was removed so that a single card would be left over — and being stuck with it, went the joke of the day, meant never marrying. It reached Japan with playing cards and settled into a version using the joker, called Baba-nuki.
It's all in how you offer. Never leave the joker in the same place twice — shift it just before your opponent reaches. A card they hesitated over and passed by is rarely the one. When it is your turn to draw, avoid the card they seem eager for you to take. Once you are down to two cards, the joker's neighbour is your enemy.
