The rules

Place stones in turn; the first to line up five in any direction wins. The rules take ten seconds to learn, and the reading goes as deep as you care to go.

Where it came from

Played with go stones in Japan since the Heian period. The competitive form, Renju, was refined in the Meiji era by adding restrictions for the first player, whose advantage was otherwise too great.

How to win

Build a double threat. Create two open threes at once and your opponent can only block one. Block their three immediately, and always attack in two directions.
